Obituary

Bertrand Barry Heckel, age 88, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on Sunday, December 29th, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his Father Adam and Mother Finola, and sister Eileen Kastner. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary; his sister Roberta Trick; his son Tom and wife Pam; daughter Ann Sommer and husband Rob; daughter Jane McDaniel; son John and wife Linda; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

As a young man, he attended the prestigious Latin School in Dayton. In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and served as an officer aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Croatan. After the war he graduated from the University of Dayton and The Harvard Business School, returning to Dayton to begin a career at The Rike Kumler Company. There he rose quickly through the executive ranks to become Executive Vice President. In 1970 he resigned from Rikes to pursue a life long dream of teaching. He enjoyed a 28-year career at Sinclair Community College as a professor of Marketing and Management.

After his faith, Bert’s family was most important to him, especially his wife Mary, to whom he was married 63 years. A long time parishioner at St. Albert the Great parish, for many years he went to daily mass with his wife. He actively bore witness to his faith.

Funeral services will be private. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton.

Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Road, Kettering, Ohio.

Donations may be sent to St. Albert the Great parish in Kettering, Ohio or Hospice of Dayton.
