Herman James Whalen
CHURUBUSCO — Herman James Whalen, 80, formerly of Churubusco, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at the CVPH Medical Center In Plattsburgh.

He was born in Ellenburg Center on Sept. 2, 1925, the son of Patrick and Malena (Trombley) Whalen.

He graduated from Ellenburg Central School in 1942 and from the State University Teachers College at Plattsburgh in 1957. He received his master’s degree from St. Lawrence University in 1959.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in 1952 to 1953. From 1956 to 1991, he taught at Massena Central School, Chateaugay Central School and the Palm Beach School System. For 10 years, he served as director of the N.Y.S. Conservation School at Ray Brook. He acquired his N.Y.S. certifications in school administration and guidance in 1983. He and his wife, Ruth, co-authored the “History of the Chateaugay Lakes,” which was published in 1997. He and his wife, Ruth, traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain and Ireland.

He was a member of Elks Lodge 621 of Plattsburgh and a former member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Ruth (Gagnier) Whalen of Plattsburgh; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Carl Whalen of Chateaugay, Bernard and Beulah Whalen of Morrisonville, Richard and Mary Whalen of Ellenburg Depot, Walter and Frances Whalen of Brainardsville, John and Kay Whalen of Merrill; a sister, Jane Barber of Dannemora; a sister-in-law, Molly Whalen of Dannemora; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents; a brother, Harold Whalen; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Walter King; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Whalen; a brother-in-law, Wilmer “Bud” Barber; and a nephew and Godson, Allen Whalen died earlier.

Calling hours will be held on Monday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Ellenburg Depot.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Monday from Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Churubusco. Interment will be in the parish cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
